What is reenacting?
Reenacting is a popular hobby with thousands of participants throughout the United States, Canada, and
Europe.  We strive to portray the daily lives of soldiers and civilians from North Carolina as well as the
battles fought over 140
Years ago during the War Between the States.  Reenacting, in addition to being just plain fun, is a great
family activity that also increases our awareness of our nation's history and our appreciation of what life
was like in the middle of the 19th century.
How do I get started?
Prospective members usually go through several phases as they enter into reenacting. The first typically is to
want to know more about the group.  The best way to do that is to talk to us. We will be happy to answer
your questions about how to get started, what you may need to buy, the time commitment, etc.  Next, if you
can, come see one of our formal or informal events.  At a public event, battle times are usually mid-morning
and mid-afternoon with living history in between.  In the winter we have private events that are used for
training and drill. This is a good time to check out reenacting without the pressure of being under the public
eye and without having to be fully equipped.  In addition, the company gets together several times a year for
meetings and drill. Getting started is surprisingly easy.
How Much Does It Cost?
Cost is a big factor in any hobby. To get totally outfitted with new equipment will run about $1,500. Before
you go running for the hills, the 38that asks that by your second or third season, you are fully equipped.
Before that time, other members will be more than happy to help you out. We have all started off at some
point or another and realize how much money is involved. Not all of us have money to burn. So you don't
have to go by everything at once. We will work with you and give you time to by all your gear.
We also strongly recommend that you work with one of our experienced members to buy your gear. Just as
there's a lot of good places to buy, there are a lot of bad ones, too. The difference between buying "off the
rack" and having a well-replicated craftsman make your gear is less than you think. The key is authenticity.
For about the same amount of money you can be more authentic in your impression.
Costs can be brought down by buying equipment off of other quality reenactors, purchasing a previously
owned musket (which is the biggest cost—a new musket will run about 500- $600), and asking the other
members where to get the best deal. Some have been outfitted with a musket below $500.
Below is a average guide to go by. You can save money by shopping around and looking for used items. Get
advice from your fellow reenactors for where to look for a good deal.

Remember you don’t have to run the first day and buy all these items. We are here to help you and guide
you.
There will be other items to purchase such as a tent or a lantern and as you progress you might want to buy
other items such as a slouch hat. Reenacting is like any other hobby, where you buy, sell, trade as you work
on your impression.
